General info on Usage Statistics

information

The Usage Statistics of a course room provide information on how intensively the available materials and activities are used, in compliance with data protection regulations. The are displayed to all course participants.

Screenshot of the Learning Analytics Dashboard. In the upper section, there is a history graph for accesses, below which there are graphs showing the development of the number of participants, the total number of views, the quizzes and assignments, and the most frequently used activities.

In course rooms that are created automatically via RWTHonline or Antrago (Continuing Education courses), the usage statistics are activated automatically. In manually created course rooms, managers may activate the usage statistics manually in the course settings.

The statistics are live and anonymous. Some of the underlying data come from Moodle itself, while other data is collected and stored anonymously using the plugin "Learning Analytics for Moodle". The collected data does not allow tracing back to individual users. The display period for data is max. 30 weeks. If a course room is used for longer than one semester, the course start date must be adjusted in the course settings to move the period back accordingly.

Learning Analytics is developed by the Center for Learning and Teaching Services at RWTH Aachen University. The development is open source. You can therefore self-check the algorithms being used and access further information on learning analytics.
