Ansys

This guide summarizes the most important information about Ansys at RWTH, including licensing, support, and learning resources.
General Information
Ansys is one of the leading high-end finite element analysis programs. It is used to solve linear and non-linear problems in structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, acoustics, thermodynamics, piezoelectricity, electromagnetism, and combined tasks (multiphysics).
Our academic Ansys licenses allow you to use Ansys Multiphysics, CFX, ICEM, and Fluent. The offering is supplemented by the Ansoft electromagnetics analysis tools, which are sold as a separate product in our Software Shop.
License Information
License Server
The Ansys licenses are split between two license servers: one for Ansys Academic Research licenses and one for Ansys Academic Teaching licenses.
- Teaching licenses are available free of charge for students on the RWTH High-Performance Computing cluster.
- Research licenses can be purchased by institutes of RWTH Aachen University in the Software Shop.
Access to the Research licenses on the license server is restricted to specific IP address ranges or user IDs on the RWTH computing cluster. After purchasing the software, please send this information along with your order confirmation to the IT Service Desk.
Please note that for Ansys versions up to 14.5, a local license server must also be installed. This is no longer necessary for version 15.0 and newer.
License Terms
ANSYS Teaching Licenses
These licenses are intended for the education of students (Bachelor, Master) and are subject to certain limitations (e.g., node and element limits). The exact range of functions corresponds to the "Ansys Academic Teaching Advanced" licenses. They may be used exclusively for student education.
ANSYS Research Licenses
These licenses are for the education of doctoral candidates and for use in publicly funded and published projects. There are no feature restrictions on research licenses.
Note: Projects funded or financed by industrial partners may not be carried out with Research licenses.
The current terms of use can be found directly at Ansys: Licensing and Terms of Use.
Support & Learning Resources
Support
Users of Research licenses receive unlimited user support directly from the manufacturer. You can get the necessary information from the IT Service Desk. Students must contact their lecturers or supervisors to open a support request with Ansys.
