What is SolidWorks?

This guide summarizes the most important information about SolidWorks at RWTH, including licensing and support.
General Information
SolidWorks is a 3D CAD programme used for creation of parametric models, assembly groups and drawings. The software is often used for small or medium-sized models in the field of mechanical engineering.
The available version already includes simple FEM and fluid motion simulations.
The RWTH University has purchased two kinds of SolidWorks licenses: the SolidWorks Premium University Research licenses and the SolidWorks Education Edition licenses.
These differ from each other in the included license features.
License Terms
License Terms - Premium University Research
These licenses are foreseen for fundamental research. They can be used to develop new technologies and methods, which provide a basis for further applications.
The results can be published or used for internal purposes.
Laboratories, which are part of the RWTH University, are able to use these licenses for academical research. It is allowed to finance such kind of research with donations.
License Terms - Education Edition
In contrast to the Premium University Research licenses, the Education Edition licenses can only be used for educational purposes. These may also be used for bachelor and master theses. For doctoral theses the research licenses must be used.
It is forbidden to use these licenses for research purposes. Laboratories of the RWTH University have no right to use these licenses.
