Background on storage reduction in the student tenant

On this page you will find information on the storage reduction for OneDrive and SharePoint Online in the students tenant which was introduced on September 17, 2024.
Like other universities, RWTH Aachen University obtains its Microsoft licenses under the Microsoft federal contract. Due to license changes at Microsoft, RWTH Aachen University has less storage space available for students since August 1, 2024. RWTH Aachen was provided with an interim solution by Microsoft at short notice, allowing students to use the services under the previous conditions until September 17, 2024.
On September 17, 2024, the necessary technical limitations of the new maximum available storage in OneDrive and SharePoint Online were implemented. This also affected OneNote notebooks.
From this point on, the following storage quota is available to students on the tenant for students:
- personal OneDrive: 10 GB
- SharePoint Online Sites: 50 GB
The terms of use were adjusted accordingly.
All OneDrive spaces and SharePoint Online sites over the new limit were actively reduced by the end users. This was achieved by migrating and/or deleting data.
We would like to point out that all end user are responsible for migrating or deleting the data. In case the the storage reduction was not adhered to, the IT Center reserved the right to restrict access to or delete the corresponding Microsoft Office 365 accounts and the Microsoft products used.
Instructions for data backup can be found under the section Additional information below.
An alternative platform or storage option offered by the IT Center is sciebo.
