Background on storage reduction in the student tenant

Kurzinformation

On this page you will find up-to-date information and instructions regarding the upcoming storage reduction for OneDrive and SharePoint Online in the tenant for students.

Detailinformation

RWTH Aachen University, like other universities, obtains its Microsoft licenses under the Microsoft federal contract.

Due to license changes at Microsoft, RWTH Aachen University has had significantly less storage space available for students since August 1 2024.

RWTH Aachen has been provided with an interim solution by Microsoft at short notice, allowing students to use the services regularly until September 17, 2024.

Nevertheless on September 17, 2024, the necessary technical limitations of the new maximum available storage in OneDrive and SharePoint Online will be implemented.

Among other things, this will also affect your OneNote notebooks.

From this point on, the following storage quota is available to students on the tenant for students:

  • personal OneDrive: 10GB storage
  • SharePoint Online Sites: 50GB storage

Please also note the already adjusted terms of use.

For all OneDrive areas and SharePoint Online sites that are currently over the new limit, this means that you must actively reduce your storage space usage on the tenant for students by migrating and/or deleting your data accordingly.

We would like to point out that you as the end user are responsible for migrating or deleting the data yourself.

If the upcoming storage reduction is not adhered to, the IT Center reserves the right to restrict access to or delete the corresponding Microsoft Office 365 accounts and the Microsoft products used via them.

Instructions for data backup can be found under "Next Steps" below.

An alternative platform or storage option offered by the IT Center is, for example, sciebo.
