Migration from git.rwth-aachen.de to git.nrw

On this page, you will find information on the transition to git.nrw as well as the options available to you for migrating your data:
Background
As part of the rollout of a central GitLab instance for all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, the migration from git.rwth-aachen.de to git.nrw is now underway. As the consortium leader of the project, RWTH is working with four other universities to set up git.nrw. git.nrw facilitates easy collaboration with other universities, offers higher performance, and is designed for large numbers of users, promising better performance and stability. A specific timeline for the migration is provided below.
You can find links for detailed instructions for switching to git.nrw on the page Migration From Gitlab to git.nrw.
Once the migration phase is complete, git.rwth-aachen.de will be shut down on July 1, 2027. Any remaining projects and data will then be permanently deleted and will no longer be available.
The transition of git-ce.rwth-aachen.de will be determined at a later date. As soon as the specific plan is available, we will inform you well in advance.
Migration process
As part of the migration to git.nrw, a one-year migration phase will begin on June 2, 2026, and run through July 1, 2027, during which users can migrate their projects. Finally, the git.rwth-aachen.de instance will be shut down.
- June 2, 2026: Start of the migration phase for existing projects:
- Users can migrate their projects and groups on their own.
- January 4, 2027: Start of the phased shutdown of git.rwth-aachen.de:
- No new projects can be created.
- No new users can be added.
- Editing existing projects is still possible.
- June 1, 2027: End of the migration phase:
- By this date, users should have migrated their projects and groups.
- Users will only have read-only access to the projects.
- July 1, 2027: Shutdown of git.rwth-aachen.de and deletion of remaining data.
Please note that you are responsible for migrating your projects yourself. We recommend that you begin the migration early to ensure the availability of your projects. You can find more information on this in the next section.
Migration to git.nrw (central GitLab instance for the universities of the DH.NRW)
RWTH members can use the NRW-wide GitLab instance git.nrw free of charge for their projects.
Step-by-step instructions can be found in the git.nrw documentation:
In addition, we will offer consultation hours regarding the migration. You can find the dates on the page Consultation Hours for the git.nrw Migration.
Note on RWTH Top-Level Groups (RWTH TLG)
RWTH users can request top-level groups using a tool. All groups created here are assigned a prefix (RWTH-) that indicates their affiliation with the university. If you need a different prefix, you can request the top-level group via a support form. You can find instructions for this on the page Groups - Apply for a top-level group.
Note for git.nrw guests
git.nrw offers guest management to its users. By default, up to 5 guests can be invited to git.nrw. You can find more details on the page Inviting External Guests to git.nrw.
