FAQ - E-Mail-Routing

No, domains first have to be registered and thereby be unlocked on the central e-mail entry.

Please contact the IT-ServiceDesk if you would like your domain to be registered. Your institute will receive a filter configuration fitted to the delivering e-mail system. This facilitates a rate limiting of the central e-mail routing structures of RWTH Aachen University and protects them from abuse.

1. Please contact the IT-ServiceDesk with the following information:
   • Domain Name
   • Server Name
   • IKZ
2. Enquiry for detailed information by the IT-ServiceDesk.
3. Determining the rate limits by means of historic data and in consultation with the customer by the IT Center
4. Setup of the filter by the IT Center.
5. Readjustment of the e-mail system by the customer.

The institute's internal e-mail server must be configured to send e-mails to 'smarthost.rwth-aachen.de'.

The central e-mail entry uses IP addresses from the IPv4 networks ranges 134.130.5.32/27 and 134.130.5.176/28 and IPv6 ranges 2a00:8a60:1:e501::/64 und 2a00:8a60:1:e502::/64 for delivery to target systems. The institute's internal e-mail server and firewall must be configured to accept connections on port 25 from these network ranges.

Please contact us. We will be happy to advise you. If the name of your server changes, the mailer table has to be adjusted. If this adjustment is not coordinated in advance, e-mails might get lost.

The central e-mail entry saves the e-mails for at least three days and automatically informs the respective sender after 4 hours about the problem. Please contact us if it is foreseeable that your server will not work properly within three days. In this case we can adjust the saving period. If this adjustment is not made, the buffered e-mails are deleted as undeliverable after the time period and the sender is informed.
