FAQ - Email Routing

No, domains must first be registered and activated on the central email gateway.

Please contact the IT-ServiceDesk if you would like your domain to be registered. Your institute will receive a filter configuration tailored to the sending email system. This enables rate limiting within the central email routing structures of RWTH Aachen University to prevent misuse.

• Please contact the IT-ServiceDesk with the following information:
  • Domain name
  • Server name
  • IKZ
• Request for detailed information by the IT Service Desk.
• Determination of throughput limits based on historical data and in consultation with the customer by the IT Center.
• Configuration of the filter by the IT Center.
• Adjustment of the email system by the customer.

The internal mail server must be configured to send emails to 'smarthost.rwth-aachen.de'.

The central mail gateway of RWTH Aachen University also provides a separate access point for encrypted email communication during transport. If you want to use this option, please apply the following smarthost configuration:

Server: smarthost-tls.rwth-aachen.de
Port: 25 (SMTP)

The central email gateway uses IP addresses from the IPv4 network ranges 134.130.5.32/27 and 134.130.5.176/28, as well as from the IPv6 ranges 2a00:8a60:1:e501::/64 and 2a00:8a60:1:e502::/64, to deliver emails to target systems. Please configure your institute’s internal mail server and firewall to accept connections on port 25 from these network ranges.

Please contact us to discuss your plans. If the name of your server changes, the mailertable must be updated. If this adjustment is not coordinated in advance, emails may be lost.

The central mail gateway stores the emails for at least three days and automatically notifies the sender after four hours about the issue. Please contact us if it is likely that your server will not be operational again within three days. In this case, we can adjust the retention period. If this adjustment is not made, the queued emails will be deleted as undeliverable after this period, and the sender will be notified.
