FAQ - sciebo
Basically, sharing via an email address is the same as sending a public link. If you want to use certain services together that aren’t available without an account, it makes sense to create a guest account. One example is Overleaf, but also Federated Calendar or Teams (the latter is planned for the future).
However, if it’s solely about sending/receiving files and editing documents, you can do so without a guest account. You can also send password-protected links to a directory with upload permissions; that way, you don’t have to share every single file with the link.

Folders that are being shared by other people automatically move to the top folder level. This issue is known; however, a timely resolution is not currently expected.

Virtual files are created using VFS (Virtual File System) and are used primarily under Windows.
Instead of dowloading the actual files, sciebo only downloads their respective metadata (file name, timestamp, etc.) to save disk space. This is particularly advantageous if you have little disk space available.
However, if you want to download your data completely locally (e.g. to create a backup of the cloud storage data) or select which data/folders to synchronize, please deactivate the feature.
Please make sure you have enough storage space on your end device.
To deactivate the feature, follow these steps:
- Open your sciebo/ownCloud client.
- In the menu of the respective account, click on the three dots.
- Select Deactivate support for virtual files.
