Building Network
What is the building network?
The RWTH building network refers to the entire wired and wireless network inside of academic buildings, laboratories, administrative buildings, lecture halls, libraries, and outdoor areas on campus. In addition to the core network, the building network provides the foundation for data, voice, and video communication, access to Internet and intranet sites, and the integration of measurement and control technology.
The IT Center serves as the central hub for the planning, operation, and maintenance of the buidling network and supports institute networks, continuously expands supported networks, and adapts them to the current state of the art.
In addition, network components are procured, configured, and kept up to date by the IT Center to ensure operation within the switch infrastructure of RWTH Aachen University.
Overall, the following tasks are of particular importance:
- Patching new connections
- Removing unused links
- Monitoring the infrastructure
- Providing support in case of errors
Who can use the building network?
All RWTH buildings are equiped with the building network, and the departments located there manage their own local networks. The IT Center manages the network infrastructure up to the respective building.
How can the building network be used?
All RWTH departments are required to be equiped with the building network and do not need to meet any additional requirements. If a wireless network is needed, a RWTH-institutes Wi-Fi network can be requested from the IT Center.
