What are Persistent Identifier (PIDs)?

information

PIDs (Persistent Identifiers) are used for the long-term and unique referencing of data. A PID contains information about the URL where the data is available. Additionally, a URL can be provided where descriptive metadata for the referenced data is stored.

If the data is moved to a different storage location, the PID information can be updated accordingly so that the PID remains valid. This allows datasets to be permanently referenced in publications, for example.
