What are Persistent Identifier (PIDs)?

PIDs (Persistent Identifiers) serve to permanently and uniquely reference data. A PID contains information about the URL under which the data can be accessed. Additionally, a URL pointing to descriptive metadata about the referenced data can be provided.
If the referenced data is moved to another storage location, the information in the PID can be updated so that it remains valid. This allows datasets, for example, to be permanently referenced in publications.
