What are Persistent Identifier (PID)?

Kurzinformation

PIDs (persistent identifier) serve to permanently and unequivocally reference data. A PID contains information such as the URL the data can be found under. Additionally, a URL pointing to describing metadata can be stored.

In case the referenced data is moved to another storage location the information of the PID can be updated so it remains valid. Thereby datasets can be permanently referenced for example in publications.
