LDAP Address Book

What is an LDAP Address Book?

The LDAP address book is the central address book for e-mail clients and other devices such as printers.
Once the central LDAP address book of RWTH Aachen University has been integrated, all email addresses at RWTH Aachen University for which the option “Visible in global address list” is active can be viewed and used for recipient selection.

Access can only be established from the RWTH network.

What is the purpose of an LDAP Address Book?

You can configure and use the LDAP address book as an address book in Outlook or Thunderbird.

The LDAP address book allows you to search for people outside your e-mail domain, whereby the existing address books in Outlook or Thunderbird only contain people who have an e-mail address within your e-mail domain.

What kinds of LDAP Address book exist?

You can use three different LDAP address book at the RWTH.

If you want to write an e-mail to the person from another RWTH institution, you can use the standard LDAP address book. This address book contains all entries that are listed in RWTHcontacts.
The following settings are required to configure this address book:

  • Server: ldappv.rwth-aachen.de
  • Port: 636
  • SSL active
  • Searchbase: ou=People,dc=rwth-aachen,dc=de

If you want to send an encrypted e-mail to a person without having exchanged your public RSA key with this person, you can use the RWTH-LDAP address directory or the DFN-LDAP address directory. In addition to the contact information, these address books contain information on public key certificates that enable encrypted communication by e-mail.
