Connection of Building Networks

details

Connecting higher education institutions to the university core network

In order to activate a data connection to the core network for higher education institutions, such as institutes, chairs, administrative units, etc., various requirements must inevitably be met:

  • Existing fibre-optic cable connection to the building concerned or associated data distribution node.
  • Free cable capacity on the required cable route.
  • Available active and passive network technology components such as patch cables (connecting cables with plugs), media converters, switches, free router ports, etc. for activating the required data connection.
  • Available personnel and transport resources.

The responsibility of the Planning and Technology Department is limited to the above physical part of the required work. In addition to the functionality of each data connection, the corresponding configurations of the associated active network technology components must also be carried out, which are carried out by the Department of Operations / Communication Division on request.

If the above requirements are not met (in particular the fibre optic cable connection of the building), suitable alternatives are required, e.g:

VDSL Connection

VDSL connections between buildings at RWTH Aachen University are used only in areas that have not yet been connected to the university core network via a fibre-optic cable infrastructure or could not be connected for technical reasons.

Requirements

The prerequisites for establishing a VDSL connection are:

  • Existing telephone cable connection between the sites to be connected.
  • Free pair of wires in this telephone cable.
  • Not unlimited number of digital services can be connected in parallel on one cable.
  • Electricity and data connection in corresponding proximity of the telephone distributors.

All installation work within the university buildings must be approved by the owner, Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW (BLB).

In addition, all work must comply with the applicable building regulations, such as fire protection, monument protection, building protection, etc.

All necessary installation work in and on university buildings for the installation of a radio link can only be carried out by specialist companies.

Directional radio links

At RWTH Aachen University, the area of application for directional radio links between buildings is limited to those areas that have not yet been connected to the university core network via a cable infrastructure or could not be connected for technical reasons.

Technically, both optical and radio-based systems can be used. There are a large number of different systems and manufacturers, which can differ greatly in price and technology. The latest and most comprehensive information on this topic can be found on the Internet.

Requirements

The prerequisite for the establishment of a radio link is:

  • Direct line of sight between the sites to be connected.
  • Possibility of mounting antennas and radio technology.
  • Power and data connection in corresponding proximity to the transmitting antenna(s) (depending on the technology used).
  • Weatherproof accommodation for the sensitive, active parts of the transmitters, also in appropriate proximity.

All installation work within the university buildings must be approved by the owner, Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW (BLB).

In addition, all work must comply with the applicable building regulations, such as fire protection, monument protection, building protection, etc..

All necessary installation work in and on university buildings for the installation of a radio link can only be carried out by specialist companies.

 Rental of external cable routes

At RWTH Aachen University, the use of leased cable routes (dark fiber, leased lines, etc.) between buildings is limited to those areas that have not yet been connected to the university core network via a fiber optic cable infrastructure or could not be connected for technical reasons.

Requirements

The prerequisite for renting a cable route is:

  • The installation and rental fees incurred must be borne by the higher education institution which requires the management.
  • Power and data connection near the transfer point to the external provider.

Connection of student dormitories

It is also possible for student residences to be connected to the university network. The resulting costs (for installation work, etc.), also in the area of the university buildings, are to be borne by the dormitories if the installations have to be carried out specifically for the respective users.

The operation and responsibility of the radio links is the responsibility of the dormitories/students as owners and users of the facilities.

The IT Center provides access to the university network subject to compliance with the Terms of Use Building Network, insofar as this is technically possible.
