Access for RWTH institutions

This guide explains the Azure access process and permissions for RWTH institutions.

  1. Obtaining the Azure Roles
  2. Application for Access to Microsoft Azure
  3. Logging into Azure

1. Obtaining the Azure Roles

Two roles are relevant for the application and subsequent use of Azure, which are assigned via the role management of your RWTH institution:

  • Role "Azure Order":
    • Allows ordering an Azure subscription in SeViRe.
    • Can be assigned by your institution's role management to employees who should order subscriptions.
    • Important: It may take up to 24 hours for the role to become active in SeViRe.
  • Role "Azure Usage":
    • Required for all users of the Azure portal.
    • This is also assigned through your institution's role management.
    • Important: Each user must comply with the terms of use of Azure.

Within the Azure portal, additional roles and authorizations are managed by administrative contact persons of the subscription Authorization structure (access control).

2. Application for Access to Microsoft Azure

All RWTH Aachen University institutions can use Microsoft Azure, provided they go through the access process to obtain a subscription.
The prerequisite for the application is the role Order Azure. To apply for access, follow these steps:

Step 1
Call up SeviRe and click on Order.

Step 2
Fill out the SeviRe form.

Step 3
Review by IT Center: The IT Center will review your usage scenario and contact you if necessary with any questions.

Step 4
Onboarding appointment: After successful review, the department will schedule an onboarding appointment with you via email. During this appointment, you will receive all important information and instructions for working with Azure.

Step 5
No further action required: Before we reach out, no further steps are required on your part.

3. Logging into Azure

Once your application has been confirmed and you have successfully completed the onboarding process, you can log in to the Azure portal and use the functionalities provided:

Step 1
Access the Azure portal: Open the website https://portal.azure.com/

Step 2
Enter email address: On the login page, enter [egal@azure.rwth-aachen.de].

Step 3
RWTH Single Sign-On: You will be automatically redirected to RWTH Single Sign-On, where you can log in with your IdM user credentials.
