Installation and confuguration of the Scheduler via command line

  1.  First, the (graphical) client must be called and the password must be entered in the following dialog. Afterwards the client can be closed.
  2.  Then the following commands must be sent in a command prompt. Change to the backup client directory

    cd "%ProgramFiles%\tivoli\tsm\baclient\"
  3. Run the program "dsmutil" with the following parameters:

    dsmcutil install /name:"RWTH Backup Client Scheduler" /node:nodename /password:skippw /autostart:yes

  4. Restart the now established Windows service "RWTH Backup Client Scheduler":

net stop "RWTH Backup Client Scheduler"
net start "RWTH Backup Client Scheduler"

  • nodename must be replaced (including upper and lower case characters) by the node name.
  • The option '/autostart:yes' causes that the TSM scheduler is started automatically, even if the computer is restarted.
  • After issuing the command an error message appears (Error 2 establishing TSM API session:The password couldn't be authenticated with the TSM server Error 2 authenticating TSM password: The password couldn't be authenticated with the TSM server) because of a failed authentication against the TSM server. This message can be ignored.

Control of the scheduler log file under Windows

After installing the Backup Client Scheduler, the Scheduler log file (defined by SCHEDLOGNAME in 'dsm.sys/dsm.opt') should be checked.
If the Scheduler was started successfully, the log file should contain an entry of the following form:

10/04/2007 00:21:12 --- SCHEDULEREC QUERY BEGIN
10/04/2007 00:21:12 --- SCHEDULEREC QUERY END
10/04/2007 00:21:12 Next operation scheduled:
10/04/2007 00:21:12 ------------------------------------------------------------
10/04/2007 00:21:12 Schedule Name: SCHED00 10/04/2007 00:21:12 Action: Incremental
10/04/2007 00:21:12 Objects: 10/04/2007 00:21:12 Options:
10/04/2007 00:21:12 Server Window Start: 00:00:00 on 10/05/2007
10/04/2007 00:21:12 ------------------------------------------------------------
10/04/2007 00:21:12 Schedule will be refreshed in 12 hours.

After checking the scheduler log file, the error log file (using ERRORLOGNAME in dsm.sys/dsm.opt) should also be checked.
