Activity completion (Lecturers)

Activity completion (Lecturers)

Kurzinformation

Activity completion allows managers to define criteria or conditions when an activity is considered completed (i.e.: successfully processed). The conditions are displayed on the course page immediately below the activity name. Once the conditions are met, they are highlighted in green. Failure to meet the conditions will be highlighted in red.

Such conditions or criteria can be: the activity has been clicked, a solution has been uploaded, a certain score has been reached, or the person has independently marked the activity as completed (= default setting).

With the help of the activity completions, students can see at a glance which activities have already been successfully completed and what they still need to do to complete a particular course. In addition to the completion criteria, students can optionally see the opening and closing dates of each activity on the course page.

1. Activity completion

Activity completions can be set individually for each activity. You can choose between three options:

  • Do not indicate activity completion - The successful completion of the activity cannot be marked. Therefore, neither a clickable element nor any other indication of activity completion will appear below or next to the activity name.

  • Students can manually mark the activity as completed (= default setting) - The successful completion of the activity can be marked manually by the students. For this purpose, a clickable element "Mark as completed" This picture shows. the 'complete activity' symbol. appears to the right of the activity name. By clicking on it, the successful completion of the activity will be highlighted by a check mark indicating "Completed" This pciture shows, the activity completed symbol. This picture alos shows the activity completed symbol..

  • Show activity as complete when conditions are met - The successful completion of an activity is automatically marked as soon as the set conditions are met. Students do not have the option here to manually mark completion. The conditions are to be set by the managers individually for the activity. Depending on the activity, different conditions can be selected. These can be, for example, simply clicking on an activity, submitting a solution, or assigning a grade.
    • For each condition to be fulfilled, a non-clickable element on a gray background appears below the name of the activity, containing the condition (e.g. To do: Receive a grade This picture shows not fullfilled conditions in grey box.).
    • The successful completion of a condition is highlighted by displaying this condition together with the indication "Done" on a green background This picture shows the symbol when the condition is fullfilled.. If several conditions are set, all conditions for the successful completion of the activity must be marked accordingly in color and text This picture shows multiple conditions for an assignment..
    • The unsuccessful processing of an activity or a condition is marked by the note "Failed" on a red background This picture shows when the condition is not completed..

Note:

Automatic marking of an activity as "Failed" is only possible if it has been specified in the conditions that an evaluation must be available for the activity completion and a grade to pass has been defined for this at the same time. For other conditions, such as a solution not submitted or submitted late, such marking is not possible. Likewise, students do not have the option to manually mark activities as "Not passed".

2. Activate activity completion for an activity

By default, activity completions are displayed in the activities. In course room with many activities, these can make the course page look cluttered and confusing, especially if you don't want completion markers in every activity. If you want to deactivate (or reactivate) activity completions for certain activities, you have to select this in the corresponding activity administration:

  1. Open the activity page.
  2. Click on the blue gear icon Gear iconin the top right corner within the white area.
  3. Select "Edit settings".
  4. Go to the "Activity Completion" section and select the desired option for completion tracking. If you want to disable completion for the activity, select the "Do not indicate activity completion" option.

This picture shows the activity completion settings option.
  5. If you have clicked the "Show activity as complete when conditions are met" option, then select the required conditions by checking the corresponding checkboxes Checkbox by mouse click . Note: The available conditions may differ depending on the selected activity.

The picture shows the conditions with checkbox, when the activity completion when conditions are met is chosen.

  6. Then click on "Save and return to course" or "Save and display". According to the settings you have chosen, the elements of the activity completion will now be hidden or displayed below the activity.

2.1. Examples of the presentation of the activity statements

The following screenshot shows an example of the various activity completions from the managers' and students' perspective. Note: Although - as in the following example - different completion options can be set for each activity, uniformity is generally recommended for reasons of clarity and transparency for students.

  • In the activity "PDF Annotator" the option Do not indicate activity completion has been selected. This is the default setting. Therefore, no activity completion can be set for the PDF Annotation.
  • In the "Glossary" and "Book" activities, the option Students can manually mark the activity as completed was selected in each case. The corresponding activities can be marked as completed by the students themselves with a mouse click. The successful completion is then marked with the note "Completed" and a green check mark (in the example "Glossary").
  • In the activities "Assignment", "Wiki", "Intermediate test" and "Final test", the option Show activity as complete when conditions are met was selected. The specific conditions can be seen in the gray or green elements below the names of the activities. The conditions for the completion of the activity "Wiki" has been fulfilled by the student and ist therefore marked in green. The final test, however, was not passed because the grade to pass was not reached. The unsuccessful completion of this activity is marked in red for the person. In the example, the activities "Assignment" and "Final test" are still outstanding. The corresponding conditions with a gray background are therefore preceded by the note "To do:".

The picture shows the perspective of manager and student.

3. Display activity data

In addition to the activity completion and their conditions, the above screenshot also shows any opening and due dates with on the course page. By default, this activity data is only visible within the individual activities by calling up a specific activity. If you want your students to see this information on the course page as well, as shown in the screenshot above, you have to activate this in the course administration:

  1. Click on the gear This picture shows, cliclable blue gear icon in the upper right corner to open the course administration.
  2. Select "Edit settings".
  3. Switch to the "Display" section and set the "Show activity dates" option to "Yes".

The picture shows the setting, where the activity datas can be chosen to show in course page.

  4. Then click on "Save changes"  to apply the changes. The activity data will now be displayed in all activities in which you have set an opening and/or closing date, e.g. "Due: Friday, July 16, 2021, 11:59 PM".

4. Completion tracking settings for the entire course room

4.1. Hide visibility of completion tracking on the course page

By default, activity completions and completion conditions are displayed on both the course page and the respective activity page. Since the information on activity completion can make the course page look cluttered and confusing, especially in course rooms with many activities, you can set it up so that the information on activity completion is only displayed on the activity page. This may make the course page look tidier, but the information on the activity completions can then only be viewed by opening the specific activity (e.g. a glossary). In this case, students will no longer be able to see at a glance which activity completions are still pending on the course page. If you would like to display the activity completions only on the activity page and hide them on the course page, you have to activate this in the course administration:

  1. Click on the gear Gear icon in the upper right corner to open the course administration.
  2. Select "Edit settings"
  3. Switch to the "Completion tracking" section and set the "Show activity completion conditions" option to "No".

The picture shows the settings, where the completion settings can be changed.

  4. Then click on "Save changes" to apply the changes. The course page now no longer displays any information on the activity completions:

The picture shows the page after all abovementioned conditions.

If you now click on any activity (e.g. "Glossary"), the status and conditions for activity completion will be displayed to you or the students. Students therefore still have the option on the activity page to manually mark the activity completion:

The picture shows the glossary with completion symbol.

Note:

If you use the "Label" resource or have included the resources "File" and/or "URL" in the course room that can be called up directly from the course page with a single mouse click, the associated activity completion elements will still be displayed directly on the course page. Since the direct access means that there is no separate activity page in RWTHmoodle, students would otherwise have no way to mark the completion of these resources. Hiding these activity completion elements is only possible by selecting the option "Do not indicate activity completion" under activity completion in the administration of the resource. In this case, there will then be no way for students to mark activity completions for this work material.

4.2. Deactivate completion tracking course-wide

You can disable completion tracking for the entire course room if required. This will completely hide all existing completion conditions and markers from the course room and they will no longer be visible to managers and students. Since these are only hidden, but not deleted, they can be displayed again to students at any time if required, without losing any existing completion markers that need to be re-entered. Course room-wide deactivation of completion tracking is done in Course Administration:

  1. Click the gear Gear icon in the upper right corner to open Course Administration.
  2. Select "Edit settings".
  3. Switch to the "Completion tracking" section and set the "Enable completion tracking" option to "No".

The picture shows completion tracking settings.

  4. Then click on "Save changes" to apply the changes. All information on the activity completions is now no longer visible. If necessary, set the option to "Yes" to display the trades again.

Note: As long as completion tracking is disabled, activity completion cannot be defined in the activity settings options.
